At Spartan we only use high-quality drainage pipes from ADS (Advanced Drainage Systems). We will never install black corrugated piping, which is prone to poor fall, shifting, becoming brittle over time, and moving far less water than a high-quality pipe. The vast majority of our buried downspout jobs are still dug by hand. We do this to preserve your grass and yard, ensuring the best appearance and minimal disruption to your home.

Why Exterior Drainage Matters

What happens during a rainfall? (620 gallons example)

Buried downspouts, french drains, curtain drains, catch basins and more. These methods of surface and roof water removal are critical to your home’s health. A single inch of rainfall on a 1,000-square-foot roof can send over 620 gallons of water through your gutters. To put that into perspective, that’s enough water to fill more than ten 50-gallon rain barrels. This highlights how a seemingly small amount of rain can lead to a massive volume of water that needs to be properly managed to protect your home.

Buried downspouts, also known as underground downspout extensions, are a highly effective way to protect your home’s foundation from water damage. When it rains, gutters collect water from your roof, and downspouts are designed to channel it away. However, if your downspouts simply dump water near the foundation, the soil can become oversaturated. This pooling water can exert pressure on your foundation, lead to cracks and shifting, and even cause basement flooding.

By burying the downspout drainage lines, you re-direct the water through a system of pipes that carry it a safe distance away from the house, ideally to the street where the city storm drain system can permanently remove the water. This prevents water from collecting around the foundation, which in turn reduces the risk of soil erosion, hydrostatic pressure, and other structural issues.
