The Nightmare Scenario
You spend $30,000 finishing your basement. You install plush carpet, new drywall, electrical wiring, and a big screen TV. Three months later, a heavy spring rain hits Columbus. You smell mustiness. The bottom of your new drywall turns soft and brown. You have to rip it all out.
This happens more often than you think.
Drywall is a Sponge
Standard building materials like drywall, wood studs, and carpet padding are organic. They love to absorb moisture. Even if you don’t have a visible “flood” with standing water, simple moisture vapor coming through the concrete can cause mold to grow behind your new walls.
The “Spartan First” Rule
Before you frame a single wall, the basement must be certified dry.
- Test the Floor: Tape a piece of clear plastic to the concrete floor. If it’s wet underneath after 24 hours, you have moisture transmission.
- Install the System: Put in your Interior Drainage and Sump Pump before the studs go up. It is much cheaper to do it now than to tear down walls later.
- Wall Vapor Barrier: Even behind drywall, we recommend a vapor barrier on the foundation walls. This directs any condensation into the drainage system, keeping your fiberglass insulation dry and mold-free.
Protect Your Investment
A finished basement adds huge value to your home, but only if it stays dry. Basement Waterproofing is the insurance policy for your renovation project. Build on a solid, dry foundation.
